Sardar vallabhbhai Patel “the Iron Man of India”

Since 2014 Indian government celebrate birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as Rastrya Ekta Diwas every year. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel also known as Iron man of India for his work in unification of India. He united the our nation by using his political and diplomatic skills.

Who was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel?

He was the brave and political acute son of mother India who served her till his last breath. He was a barrister by profession. Initially he was not agree with Gandhi’s methods used for independence of India.But when he met with Gandhi,he influenced him a lot and his way of thinking about Gandhi changed ever since.

This was the time when a new Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born.

After that he participated in all civil disobedience movement organised by Gandhi and become a keen follower of him.

After 2nd round table conference when Gandhi had started civil disobedience movement. He along with other political leaders was arrested and sent to Yervada jail in Maharashtra. It was Patel who took care of Gandhi and personal bonding established between Gandhi and Patel.

He was also a member of Congress and played an important role in Congress political policies. He tried his best to contain Jinha who want nothing but the Pakistan,a separate nation for muslim community.

Why Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is called Sardar?

The story start with “Bardoli Satyagrah” when he led the movement and ask the people of modern day Gujarat not to pay land revenue tax. There was famine in Gujarat but the government at Bombay demanded higher tax. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel raised voice against it and started a movement called as Bardoli Satyagrah.During this movement ,the women of Bardoli awarded him the title of Sardar,after that people started calling him as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. At last, Government of Bombay accepted the demand of farmers .

What is the contribution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in modern day India?

He contributed a lot in formation of modern day India.Our nation what we see today is the result of his efforts.He was the man who is responsible for Unity in Diversity at least at geographical level in the beginning. When the cabinet mission was sent to India, he was the key player in decision making and countering Jinha who turned complete hostile to Indian National Congress(INC).

Jinha claimed that Muslim league is real representative of Muslims.INC cannot represent Muslims, stated Jinha, and at the same time INC president was Mollana Ajjad who was a Muslim.

Cabinet mission member Sir Stafford Cripps and Lord Lorange Pathik supported Sardar Patel and helped INC to form cabinet for constitution making process.

After Indian Independence the real task of uniting India was done by Sardar Patel.He used the policy of “Saam- Daam-Dand-Bhed” to appease Princely states so that they join the newly form Union Of India.He used the policy of  Privy-Purse to give financial benefits to the heads of Princely states in adjoining with India.

Junagarh was joined to India by the way of referendum, Patel was sure that people of Junagarh will support India.

Operation Polo was launched when Nizzam of Hyderabad  declared themselves Independent,rejected the appeal of Sardar to join India. Within 5 days of operations Nizzam gave up and Hyderabad acceded to India.

Intially Jammu & Kashmir didn’t want to join either India or Pakistan.But when well trained fighters from Pakistan infiltrated to Jammu and Kashmir and captured Gilgit-Baltistan.Then to counter those infiltrators, Raja Hari Singh signed the instrument of instructions with India and Sardar Patel sent Indian army to protect Kashmir.

In case of J&K Pandit Nehru decided to take the help of UN while Sardar Patel was completely against it and even till today we have seen that efficiency of UN is very poor and J&K issue is not resolved till 2017!

In 1950 it was the bad luck of India that the Iron man passed away.Before that he tried to unify the India as much as he could. We salute the Great leader of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.I wish and pray he would always live in our heart forever.
